Fire Risk Assessment
Fire risk assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of potential hazards that could cause harm to people due to fire in your workplace and work activities. The assessment will help you determine the likelihood of a fire occurring and the level of danger posed by the workplace to those who use it. The primary objective of the assessment is to ascertain whether the existing fire safety measures are sufficient and appropriate in comparison to the overall risks that are present or if additional control measures are necessary.
The term 'Fire Risk' refers to the probability of a fire occurring multiplied by the severity of the fire. The severity is measured in terms of the potential harm and consequences, including loss of life, fire spread, and damage.
Mitigation in terms of potential harm and consequence considers what measures are currently in place and how these are maintained, for example, servicing and maintaining alarm systems, checks on fire doors a suitable number of maintained fire extinguishers and the training provided to staff.
Dangerous Substance and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002
Critical to Fire Safety is understanding processes that present a risk through using or creating Dangerous Substances or an Explosive Atmosphere.
What is a Dangerous Substance or Explosive Atmosphere?
Dangerous substances are any substances used or present at work that could, if not properly controlled, cause harm to people due to a fire, explosion or corrosion of metal. They can be found in nearly all workplaces and include solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases, such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG), dust from machining and sanding operations, dust from foodstuffs, pressurised gases and substances corrosive to metal.
DSEAR requires assessing and controlling risks, implementing mitigation measures, developing emergency plans, and providing information, instruction and employee training.
