Course Information
Aim: Provides understanding of how exposure to hazardous substances arises in the workplace and introduces methods and technologies to control exposures and reduce risks to health.

- Understand how airborne contaminants are generated and how this influences control strategies.
- Apply the hierarchy of control to achieve adequate risk reduction.
- Recognise the importance of workplace and process design in reducing exposures.
- Understand the principles, design, and performance of ventilation systems, particularly local exhaust ventilation (LEV).
- Assess and optimise control measures such as ventilation and PPE.
- Implement effective PPE programmes (RPE, gloves, protective clothing).
- Appreciate the role of administrative measures (training, supervision, health surveillance) in sustaining control.

Written open-book exam – 40 short-answer questions (2 hours). Pass mark: 50%.
Successful candidates are awarded: M505 – Control of Hazardous Substances.
In person course held in Derby.
