Build your understanding of how hazardous substances affect the body with this practical introduction to toxicology and occupational health. This course explores the main routes of exposure, target organ effects, and the health risks linked to common workplace substances, from gases, vapours, and dusts to metals and industrial processes.
Designed for technicians, technologists, and occupational hygiene professionals, it combines essential theory with applied case studies and assessments, giving you the skills to recognise risks and understand their health impact in real-world workplaces.
Course Information
Aim: Introduces the principles of toxicology, harmful health effects of hazardous substances on target organs, and risks linked to common workplace substances.
Technicians, technologists, and occupational hygiene professionals.
Anyone involved in workplace exposure monitoring, testing, or health risk evaluation.
- Define toxicological terms and understand dose–response relationships.
- Identify routes of exposure (inhalation, skin, ingestion) and how substances are absorbed, distributed, stored, metabolised, and eliminated.
- Recognise the main target organs (respiratory system, skin, nervous system, circulatory system, liver, kidneys, reproductive system) and related health effects.
- Understand the health risks from gases, vapours, dusts, metals, and industrial processes.
- Conduct basic interpretation of epidemiological studies.
- Gain awareness of biological agents and their potential workplace impact (not examined).

Length: ~45 hours (37 taught + 8 independent study).
Practical assessment – data evaluation and scenario-based studies of exposure routes and health effects.
Written open-book exam – 40 short-answer questions (2 hours). Pass mark: 50%.
Successful candidates are awarded: M507 – Health Effects of Hazardous Substances.
In person course held in Derby.
